[00:00:05] Thank you for listening to the Calvary Monterey Podcast. To learn more about our church, please visit calvary.com. And for additional resources from our lead pastor, Nate Holdridge, please visit nateholdridge.com. Teaching today is our family pastor, Matt Kaler.

[00:00:24] Good to be together this morning and I'm excited to be able to teach the word this morning. We're in Philippians chapter two. So if you don't have a Bible, we have some in the back. I was going to say, raise your hand. I don't think we do that.

[00:00:36] Maybe I'm just going to make it up. Raise your hand and maybe we'll get a Bible in your hands. It will also be on the screen as well. So it's been a good long weekend. So you guys get the good long tired Matt here this morning.

[00:00:52] But man, I'm so excited to teach this passage and really Nate asked me to share on the topic of sanctification as he's working through the book of Philippians and we're going through that together.

[00:01:04] I want to dive into this topic. If you don't know what that is, that's okay. We're going to talk about it and we're going to see what the Lord has to say to us today.

[00:01:11] So Philippians chapter two, we're looking at verses 12 and 13 together. I want to read that and then we'll pray and jump in.

[00:01:21] Paul writes and he says,

[00:01:38] Let's pray.

[00:01:40] Father, thank you so much, God, that you are committed to this process of sanctification in our lives.

[00:01:48] And thank you, Lord, that this is not a burdensome assignment.

[00:01:55] Lord, we thank you today that, Lord, your yoke is easy and your burden is light.

[00:02:00] And Lord, we want to walk in all that you have.

[00:02:03] So as we explore this topic, God, would you give us that great measure of grace to accomplish what you have set before us to accomplish?

[00:02:14] Encourage our hearts.

[00:02:15] Lord, we pray that you would lift our eyes to you, our helper today.

[00:02:21] We love you and thank you.

[00:02:23] In Jesus name.

[00:02:24] Amen.

[00:02:24] Amen.

[00:02:26] Well, maybe you've heard about the guy who prayed,

[00:02:28] Lord, so far today I've done all right.

[00:02:31] I haven't gossiped or lost my temper.

[00:02:33] I haven't been nasty or greedy or grumpy.

[00:02:36] But in a few minutes, I'm going to have to get out of bed.

[00:02:39] And then I'm going to need all the help I can get.

[00:02:43] Can any of you relate to that?

[00:02:45] All the parents in the room said yes.

[00:02:47] Amen.

[00:02:49] Are there gaps in your life that you'd like to see God change?

[00:02:52] Or is it just me?

[00:02:55] Okay, well then let's close in prayer.

[00:02:57] Now, maybe you'd like to have more self-control.

[00:03:02] You'd like to not lose your temper so much.

[00:03:04] You'd like to stop being jealous of the opportunities that other people get and instead find contentment with where God has you.

[00:03:12] If we are honest, we all have areas in our lives that we want God to change.

[00:03:17] Whether it's a sin struggle.

[00:03:20] Something that we've battled for years that we just can't seem to shake.

[00:03:25] An attitude that keeps creeping in to the relationships of our lives.

[00:03:31] Or maybe it's a behavior pattern where it seems that whatever we try, we find ourselves again and again returning to that same thing.

[00:03:38] Today, I want to talk about how change is truly possible and how it's part of God's plan for you and I.

[00:03:46] I want to look at the topic of sanctification.

[00:03:49] Now, to be sanctified means to be set apart for a purpose.

[00:03:54] And the purpose that we see from Scripture that God has set us apart is to be made more like Jesus in our actions and our thoughts and our motivations.

[00:04:02] For the glory of God and for the good of others.

[00:04:06] And this process that God takes us through to become more like Him is what we call sanctification.

[00:04:12] In fact, the definition for sanctification is the ongoing process by which believers, through the work of the Holy Spirit,

[00:04:19] are progressively transformed into the likeness of Christ.

[00:04:25] Some other terms that describe this process are maybe spiritual formation.

[00:04:32] Discipleship or apprenticeship under Jesus.

[00:04:35] All of these describe the process of God growing us and maturing us in Him.

[00:04:39] You see, the Christian life is not just about getting saved and spending eternity with God.

[00:04:44] There is a period between the time we get saved and we are given a new identity and we are brought into the family of God

[00:04:52] and the day that we go and meet Jesus in heaven and eternity.

[00:04:56] There's a time between that that we would call sanctification.

[00:05:01] This is the time that God grows us and matures us in Him.

[00:05:06] He does the work of a gardener.

[00:05:07] He prunes.

[00:05:09] He pulls weeds.

[00:05:10] He waters.

[00:05:11] And over time, that once wild, entangled garden begins to flourish.

[00:05:17] We bear fruit and we display the beauty and the glory of God.

[00:05:21] This is the work of sanctification.

[00:05:23] And this is what I want to talk about today.

[00:05:25] So three things, if you're a note taker, we're going to look at today.

[00:05:28] We're going to look at the foundation for our sanctification, the process of our sanctification,

[00:05:35] and then the invitation that Jesus holds out for us today.

[00:05:39] Now, I got to say on the front end of this topic that it's not going to be an exhaustive study on the topic of sanctification.

[00:05:46] We don't have time to fully do it justice.

[00:05:49] So I want to encourage you, if you are interested, to study even more on your own.

[00:05:54] Another disclaimer is some of us, maybe we've grown up in the church,

[00:05:57] and you've heard sanctification taught in a way that you kind of come away thinking,

[00:06:02] wow, it's my works that gain me favor and standing with God.

[00:06:07] And I just want to say on the front end, that's not what the Bible says.

[00:06:09] That's not what the gospel says.

[00:06:11] The gospel says that we are accepted because of what Christ has done for us, not because of what we do.

[00:06:17] Faith alone in the cross of Christ is what justifies us.

[00:06:21] Our sanctification is not what makes us right before God.

[00:06:24] It's the work of Christ on our behalf.

[00:06:26] So we got to get that straight.

[00:06:28] I might mention that a few more times throughout this teaching, just so we know that's not what we're talking about.

[00:06:33] We're not trying to earn anything here.

[00:06:35] But for others, maybe you've come in burdened this morning,

[00:06:38] and maybe you heard about sanctification, and maybe you just immediately thought,

[00:06:42] oh man, now there's a bunch of stuff I'm going to have to do.

[00:06:46] What are you going to tell me I'm doing wrong, and what do I need to do?

[00:06:49] What do I need to add to the list?

[00:06:51] Well, I want to encourage you today too,

[00:06:54] because for those of us that find ourselves struggling,

[00:06:57] and maybe constantly failing, and falling, and trying to change,

[00:07:03] and you find yourself not being able to,

[00:07:05] I believe there is hope for you,

[00:07:07] because God's design for us as believers is not that we would perpetually live

[00:07:12] falling and failing day in and day out,

[00:07:14] but I believe there is power to change in the gospel.

[00:07:20] So with all that being said, let's jump in.

[00:07:24] Let's talk about our foundation.

[00:07:25] And let's look at verse 12 of our passage here, Philippians chapter 2.

[00:07:29] Again, it says,

[00:07:39] What is first required for us in order to experience deep, lasting change in our life?

[00:07:46] Well, Paul says, work out your own salvation.

[00:07:48] That word work out means live out.

[00:07:51] Live out your salvation.

[00:07:54] You see, Paul's talking to believers here.

[00:07:56] He's not talking to believers and unbelievers.

[00:07:59] This is a letter written for Christians.

[00:08:01] And he knows that they have made a decision to accept Jesus into their life,

[00:08:05] to trust him as Savior.

[00:08:07] And as a result, they've experienced salvation for their souls.

[00:08:12] This is so important because before we live out,

[00:08:15] we need to first experience salvation coming into our lives.

[00:08:21] Salvation in this passage has the idea of being rescued.

[00:08:25] What Paul is saying is,

[00:08:26] I want you to live out the implications of your rescue in Christ.

[00:08:30] I want you to live out the implications of your rescue in Christ.

[00:08:35] Let your salvation, that moment that God found you,

[00:08:38] cleansed you,

[00:08:38] redeemed you,

[00:08:39] and rescued you from the life you were living,

[00:08:41] let that moment be fuel for how you live your life with him.

[00:08:46] Let your justification,

[00:08:47] another big theological word that speaks to the finished work

[00:08:50] that Christ accomplished on the cross,

[00:08:52] where we don't have to do anything but simply receive it.

[00:08:55] Let your justification fuel your sanctification.

[00:09:00] Your sanctification does not justify you.

[00:09:02] And I want us to get this right.

[00:09:05] Growing up, my family,

[00:09:08] we loved this show called Rescue 911.

[00:09:11] Anybody remember that show?

[00:09:13] William Shatner was the host.

[00:09:15] It was great.

[00:09:16] It highlighted first responders and 911 operators.

[00:09:21] And it told stories of how lives were saved in emergency situations

[00:09:27] because of the aid of the 911 operator

[00:09:31] or the aid of the first responder.

[00:09:33] And I loved watching these shows

[00:09:34] because they would tell the story,

[00:09:36] but then they would get actors to reenact,

[00:09:38] like whatever it was,

[00:09:39] someone choking at the dinner table

[00:09:41] and, you know,

[00:09:41] someone calling 911 on an old dial phone.

[00:09:45] A lot of the people in the room don't understand what that is.

[00:09:47] But, you know,

[00:09:47] you actually had to press buttons down.

[00:09:50] And then I love the part when the person gets saved

[00:09:54] and, you know,

[00:09:55] the first responder comes in

[00:09:57] or the 911 operator tells someone how to do CPR.

[00:09:59] There would always be the last part

[00:10:01] where they're all basically doing okay.

[00:10:03] And a year later,

[00:10:04] it shows the impact that those first responders had

[00:10:09] on those families' lives.

[00:10:11] It would inevitably show them,

[00:10:13] like sitting around a table at Thanksgiving

[00:10:15] or like Christmas.

[00:10:17] This first responder became a part of like their family traditions

[00:10:21] because they were so just impacted

[00:10:24] and grateful and thankful

[00:10:26] that they were used to save their life.

[00:10:29] And in a way,

[00:10:30] these families were living out the implications

[00:10:33] of their rescue, right?

[00:10:35] And I think that's kind of the idea

[00:10:37] that Paul's talking about here.

[00:10:38] The fact that you've been saved and rescued by Jesus,

[00:10:42] let's let that change the way we live.

[00:10:45] Let's let that change the traditions

[00:10:47] and kind of work around our lives

[00:10:51] to where we live differently now

[00:10:53] that we've been rescued.

[00:10:55] That's what Paul is talking about here.

[00:10:58] A phrase I grew up hearing often

[00:11:01] as I was growing up in the church

[00:11:02] is the phrase born-again Christian.

[00:11:04] You guys remember that one?

[00:11:06] You never remember the term born-again Christian?

[00:11:08] So I just remember it and thinking like,

[00:11:11] well, maybe there's Christians

[00:11:13] and then there's born-again Christians.

[00:11:15] Or there's these two different

[00:11:17] kind of types of Christians here.

[00:11:19] And I mean, I hear the born-again Christian

[00:11:21] spoken of positively.

[00:11:22] So I want to be of the born-again Christian.

[00:11:24] And it may have just been a way

[00:11:26] to further highlight

[00:11:28] those that really understand

[00:11:31] that their identity is in Christ.

[00:11:33] And I think that was a way.

[00:11:35] You know, Nicodemus, as he came to Jesus,

[00:11:37] what must I do?

[00:11:37] You know, Jesus said,

[00:11:39] you must be born again.

[00:11:41] There's this idea that

[00:11:42] when we give our lives to Jesus,

[00:11:44] we are given a new identity.

[00:11:47] That we are not the same.

[00:11:49] And therefore, we shouldn't continue

[00:11:52] to do the same things that we did

[00:11:53] before meeting Jesus.

[00:11:55] Paul put it this way in 2 Corinthians 5, 17.

[00:11:57] Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,

[00:12:00] that's that born-again nature.

[00:12:02] The new creation has come.

[00:12:04] The old has gone.

[00:12:05] The new is here.

[00:12:07] Friends, sanctification is simply

[00:12:08] living into the new.

[00:12:10] It's living into the new

[00:12:12] that God has for you and I.

[00:12:15] As Paul said,

[00:12:16] work out your salvation.

[00:12:18] Notice he doesn't say

[00:12:18] work for your salvation.

[00:12:20] I just want to say it again.

[00:12:22] Sanctification is not earning

[00:12:24] or working for your salvation.

[00:12:27] When we are saved, forgiven, redeemed,

[00:12:29] it's not a result of a work that we did.

[00:12:31] It's a result of the work that God did

[00:12:33] by sending Jesus to take our place.

[00:12:36] Now, why spend time on this?

[00:12:38] Because again, if we're not careful,

[00:12:42] sanctification starts to, for some,

[00:12:45] become the process of earning God's love,

[00:12:48] earning God's favor,

[00:12:50] doing the Christian things.

[00:12:52] I feel like when I read my Bible,

[00:12:54] God's like gonna bless me.

[00:12:56] I feel like when I'm praying,

[00:12:58] God's gonna, when I'm fasting,

[00:12:59] I mean, who knows?

[00:13:00] God's gonna do a lot of things

[00:13:01] when I'm fasting.

[00:13:03] We start to think of even

[00:13:05] the spiritual disciplines that way.

[00:13:06] And we start to consider

[00:13:08] that maybe I'm actually tapping into

[00:13:11] a greater degree of God's favor

[00:13:14] or blessing on my life.

[00:13:15] And I just,

[00:13:16] I want us to understand

[00:13:19] that God's grace

[00:13:20] is so wonderful

[00:13:23] and so amazing.

[00:13:25] As one of my favorite authors says,

[00:13:27] on our worst days,

[00:13:29] our worst days are never so bad

[00:13:31] that we are beyond the reach

[00:13:32] of God's grace.

[00:13:33] And our best days are never so good

[00:13:35] that we are beyond the need

[00:13:37] of God's grace.

[00:13:39] Friends, this becomes the foundation

[00:13:41] for real deep lasting change.

[00:13:43] Which day does God love me more?

[00:13:45] When I'm doing all the things?

[00:13:47] When I'm doing all the things?

[00:13:47] Or when I'm utterly failing?

[00:13:50] God loves me the same.

[00:13:53] We can trip out on that.

[00:13:56] That God loves me

[00:13:57] when I'm walking

[00:13:58] and I'm obeying

[00:13:59] and I'm doing the things

[00:14:00] that I know God has laid

[00:14:02] before me to do.

[00:14:03] And that actually becomes fuel

[00:14:06] to continue to do those things.

[00:14:08] But to understand

[00:14:09] that this isn't a measure

[00:14:10] of God,

[00:14:12] us earning more

[00:14:13] of God's favor.

[00:14:14] That's not what that is.

[00:14:16] God loves me fully

[00:14:17] as I am,

[00:14:19] accepts me in Christ.

[00:14:21] That is our justification.

[00:14:23] That is our rescue.

[00:14:24] And sanctification

[00:14:26] is simply living out

[00:14:27] the implications of the rescue.

[00:14:29] Okay.

[00:14:29] With that foundation,

[00:14:31] let's talk about the process

[00:14:33] that God has for us

[00:14:35] when it comes to sanctification.

[00:14:37] This sanctification

[00:14:38] of becoming more like Jesus

[00:14:39] and our thoughts

[00:14:40] and our actions

[00:14:41] and our attitudes.

[00:14:42] I want us to turn to

[00:14:44] 2 Peter chapter 1.

[00:14:45] If you can.

[00:14:46] We're going to have it

[00:14:47] on the screen as well.

[00:14:48] But this is a great passage

[00:14:49] that I believe speaks to this,

[00:14:51] what God has for us

[00:14:52] when it comes to living out

[00:14:53] the implications

[00:14:54] of our rescue.

[00:14:56] I'm going to read it there.

[00:14:58] Peter's writing.

[00:14:59] He says,

[00:15:00] His divine power

[00:15:01] has given us

[00:15:02] everything

[00:15:03] we need

[00:15:04] for a godly life

[00:15:05] through our knowledge

[00:15:06] of Him

[00:15:07] who called us

[00:15:08] by His own glory

[00:15:09] and goodness.

[00:15:10] First,

[00:15:11] this just tells us

[00:15:12] that the kind of life

[00:15:13] that God wants us to live,

[00:15:15] He's giving us

[00:15:15] all that we need

[00:15:16] in order to live

[00:15:17] that kind of life.

[00:15:19] None of us are able

[00:15:19] to say,

[00:15:20] well, man,

[00:15:20] I don't know if I can do it, Lord.

[00:15:23] I don't know

[00:15:23] if you're strong enough.

[00:15:24] I don't know

[00:15:25] if your grace

[00:15:25] is enabling enough.

[00:15:27] No.

[00:15:27] Peter says,

[00:15:28] He's given us

[00:15:29] all we need

[00:15:30] through the knowledge

[00:15:31] of Him who called us.

[00:15:32] Verse 4,

[00:15:42] He goes on

[00:15:43] and He talks about

[00:15:44] how through His promises

[00:15:45] and through His word

[00:15:47] and through His scriptures

[00:15:47] that we get to be brought in

[00:15:50] and understand even deeper

[00:15:52] the divine nature

[00:15:53] as His sons and daughters,

[00:15:55] heirs of the King,

[00:15:57] this new identity

[00:15:58] that we now have with us.

[00:16:01] For this very reason

[00:16:02] in verse 5,

[00:16:03] make every effort

[00:16:04] to add to your faith goodness,

[00:16:06] to goodness knowledge,

[00:16:07] to knowledge self-control

[00:16:08] and to self-control perseverance,

[00:16:10] to perseverance godliness,

[00:16:12] to godliness mutual affection

[00:16:14] and to mutual affection love.

[00:16:16] For if you possess

[00:16:18] these qualities

[00:16:18] in increasing measure,

[00:16:20] they will keep you

[00:16:21] from being ineffective

[00:16:22] and unproductive

[00:16:23] in your knowledge

[00:16:23] of our Lord Jesus Christ.

[00:16:25] But whoever does not have them

[00:16:26] is nearsighted and blind,

[00:16:28] forgetting that they

[00:16:29] have been cleansed

[00:16:30] from their past sins.

[00:16:32] Now there's so much

[00:16:33] we could say

[00:16:33] about this passage

[00:16:34] and I'd love to do

[00:16:35] a deeper dive on this,

[00:16:37] but what I want us

[00:16:39] to see here

[00:16:39] and I think it's important,

[00:16:42] notice verse 5 says,

[00:16:43] if you possess

[00:16:44] these qualities

[00:16:45] in increasing measure,

[00:16:47] these things that God

[00:16:47] wants to add

[00:16:48] into our lives,

[00:16:49] these things that God

[00:16:50] wants to change

[00:16:51] and produce,

[00:16:52] the fruit,

[00:16:52] if you will,

[00:16:53] that God wants us

[00:16:54] to start exhibiting

[00:16:56] in our lives.

[00:16:56] notice Paul is saying

[00:16:58] that there is

[00:16:58] an increasing measure,

[00:17:00] there is a gradual quality

[00:17:02] to you being made

[00:17:04] more like Jesus.

[00:17:06] What I want us to see

[00:17:07] is sanctification,

[00:17:09] it's not about perfection,

[00:17:11] it's about progress.

[00:17:14] It's not about reaching

[00:17:15] some sinless perfection.

[00:17:17] That's not gonna happen

[00:17:18] until glory.

[00:17:19] When we are with the Lord,

[00:17:20] we're given a new body

[00:17:21] and man,

[00:17:22] I cannot wait

[00:17:22] for that day.

[00:17:25] But man,

[00:17:25] while we're here on earth,

[00:17:27] living out the implications

[00:17:28] of our rescue

[00:17:29] means that we are progressing

[00:17:30] along the road

[00:17:31] that God has called us to.

[00:17:33] I think it's important

[00:17:34] because some of us maybe,

[00:17:36] we just wish

[00:17:37] that there was like a,

[00:17:38] there was just a way

[00:17:39] to get zapped

[00:17:39] where we could just

[00:17:40] all of a sudden

[00:17:41] become sanctified.

[00:17:42] I don't know,

[00:17:42] have you ever thought

[00:17:43] that before?

[00:17:44] Like man,

[00:17:44] where's the app

[00:17:46] that I can download

[00:17:47] that I could just,

[00:17:49] you know,

[00:17:49] turn it on

[00:17:50] and then all of a sudden

[00:17:51] I'm good,

[00:17:52] I'm mature in Christ

[00:17:53] and the full stature

[00:17:54] of the measure of Jesus,

[00:17:55] you know,

[00:17:56] reminds me of the movie Big.

[00:17:57] If you,

[00:17:58] if you remember that one,

[00:17:58] Tom Hanks character,

[00:17:59] right?

[00:17:59] He goes to that carnival

[00:18:01] and goes up to the machine

[00:18:02] that grants him a wish

[00:18:03] and goes home the next morning.

[00:18:05] He wakes up

[00:18:06] and he's like 20 years older,

[00:18:07] right?

[00:18:07] He's matured.

[00:18:09] Can we do that?

[00:18:10] You know,

[00:18:10] can I just find

[00:18:11] a machine somewhere?

[00:18:13] Maybe there's another church

[00:18:14] in town,

[00:18:14] I'll go

[00:18:15] and then I'll wake up

[00:18:16] the next morning

[00:18:16] and all of a sudden

[00:18:17] I'm mature in the Lord

[00:18:19] or it makes me think

[00:18:20] of that matrix

[00:18:22] scene where,

[00:18:23] which Pastor Manny

[00:18:24] told me about.

[00:18:25] He's still being sanctified

[00:18:26] so he watches movies

[00:18:27] like this but

[00:18:31] I'm kidding,

[00:18:31] I've seen it.

[00:18:32] So,

[00:18:33] now I gotta repent

[00:18:34] because I lied.

[00:18:36] Still being sanctified.

[00:18:37] So,

[00:18:38] you know,

[00:18:38] but that scene

[00:18:39] where Neo,

[00:18:40] he downloads like

[00:18:41] the Kung Fu package

[00:18:42] or whatever

[00:18:42] and all of a sudden

[00:18:43] he says,

[00:18:44] I know Kung Fu.

[00:18:45] Remember that one?

[00:18:46] Why can't we do,

[00:18:47] isn't there like a

[00:18:49] family virtue package

[00:18:50] where it's like,

[00:18:51] I now love my family

[00:18:52] at all times

[00:18:53] and I'm gentle

[00:18:54] and patient.

[00:18:56] I mean,

[00:18:57] we wish that

[00:18:58] that could happen

[00:18:58] but friends,

[00:18:59] that's not

[00:19:00] what the Bible

[00:19:01] describes as sanctification.

[00:19:03] Sanctification,

[00:19:04] the process of becoming

[00:19:04] more like Jesus

[00:19:05] is gradual.

[00:19:07] Now,

[00:19:08] that's not to say

[00:19:09] and I wanna

[00:19:10] make sure,

[00:19:11] that's not to say

[00:19:12] that God can't deliver

[00:19:13] in a moment

[00:19:15] us from certain

[00:19:16] addictions or sins

[00:19:17] that have been

[00:19:18] plaguing our lives

[00:19:19] for years and years.

[00:19:21] I know some of you,

[00:19:22] you're here

[00:19:22] because you've had

[00:19:24] that experience

[00:19:25] of God's grace

[00:19:26] poured out in measure

[00:19:27] for a specific thing

[00:19:28] in your life

[00:19:29] where you're just like,

[00:19:30] oh my gosh,

[00:19:31] I'm never going back

[00:19:32] to that.

[00:19:33] You've tasted

[00:19:34] and seen

[00:19:34] of the goodness

[00:19:35] of God

[00:19:36] and you're never

[00:19:36] going back.

[00:19:37] Now,

[00:19:37] that's definitely

[00:19:38] a way that God

[00:19:39] can deliver us

[00:19:41] but is that the way

[00:19:42] that God always

[00:19:43] chooses to change us.

[00:19:45] No.

[00:19:46] There are times

[00:19:47] where God can remove

[00:19:49] a desire,

[00:19:50] that God can remove

[00:19:51] a sin struggle

[00:19:53] but don't grow discouraged

[00:19:55] when that doesn't happen

[00:19:56] for you

[00:19:56] because you guys,

[00:19:57] sanctification,

[00:19:58] it takes time.

[00:20:00] When those things

[00:20:01] you are not wanting

[00:20:02] to be a part of your life

[00:20:03] seem to still

[00:20:05] present themselves,

[00:20:06] sanctification,

[00:20:07] remember,

[00:20:07] is a marathon,

[00:20:08] it's not a sprint.

[00:20:09] You think about Peter,

[00:20:10] Peter,

[00:20:11] the great apostle

[00:20:12] who we are learning

[00:20:13] from even now.

[00:20:15] But remember Peter's story,

[00:20:16] this man that spent

[00:20:17] three years with Jesus

[00:20:18] day and night

[00:20:19] sitting under Jesus,

[00:20:21] master,

[00:20:22] teacher,

[00:20:23] rabbi,

[00:20:24] and he had moments

[00:20:24] of great insight

[00:20:25] and revelation

[00:20:26] where he declared

[00:20:27] the truth

[00:20:27] and was used of God

[00:20:28] to speak prophetically

[00:20:30] where Jesus said,

[00:20:32] man,

[00:20:32] blessed are you,

[00:20:33] Simon.

[00:20:34] Flesh and blood

[00:20:35] has not revealed this to you

[00:20:36] but my father

[00:20:37] was in heaven.

[00:20:37] And then there are moments

[00:20:38] where Jesus is sharing

[00:20:40] with his disciples

[00:20:41] what he's gonna have to do

[00:20:42] and suffer

[00:20:42] and go to the cross

[00:20:44] and Peter says,

[00:20:44] Jesus,

[00:20:45] you know,

[00:20:45] pulls him aside.

[00:20:46] No,

[00:20:47] we're not gonna let that happen.

[00:20:49] And then Jesus says,

[00:20:50] well,

[00:20:50] get thee behind me,

[00:20:51] Satan.

[00:20:52] You know,

[00:20:52] like Peter went from,

[00:20:54] hey,

[00:20:54] blessed are you

[00:20:55] to,

[00:20:55] hey,

[00:20:55] Satan,

[00:20:56] get out of here

[00:20:57] because I gotta do this.

[00:20:58] Peter had these moments

[00:21:00] when he should have been there

[00:21:01] for Jesus,

[00:21:02] he bailed on him,

[00:21:03] denying him three times.

[00:21:05] But then after the cross

[00:21:06] and the resurrection,

[00:21:07] Jesus pursued Peter,

[00:21:09] didn't he?

[00:21:09] He restored Peter.

[00:21:10] Peter filled with the Holy Spirit

[00:21:12] the day at Pentecost,

[00:21:13] preached the gospel

[00:21:13] and over 3,000 people get saved.

[00:21:16] We see this progress with Peter

[00:21:18] but then even later

[00:21:19] in the book of Acts,

[00:21:20] if you recall,

[00:21:21] what did,

[00:21:21] Paul had to call Peter out

[00:21:23] because Peter,

[00:21:24] once again,

[00:21:25] the fear of man

[00:21:26] seemed to creep in

[00:21:27] and he started favoring

[00:21:28] the Jewish believers

[00:21:29] where Paul said,

[00:21:30] no,

[00:21:30] that's not the gospel.

[00:21:32] But now we see Peter,

[00:21:33] this letter,

[00:21:35] that he wrote

[00:21:35] that we get to glean from

[00:21:37] and one of the most detailed accounts

[00:21:39] of the kind of sanctification

[00:21:41] that God does in our lives.

[00:21:42] I wonder if he just,

[00:21:45] why we have this

[00:21:45] is because he just knew

[00:21:46] so much about it

[00:21:47] because of his own progress

[00:21:49] and his own sanctification.

[00:21:51] Guys,

[00:21:51] sanctification,

[00:21:52] it's gradual.

[00:21:54] Number two,

[00:21:55] sanctification

[00:21:55] is a result of God's work in us.

[00:21:58] It's a result of God's work in us.

[00:22:00] Again,

[00:22:01] verse 13 of chapter 2

[00:22:03] in Philippians,

[00:22:03] for it is God

[00:22:04] who works in you

[00:22:05] both to will

[00:22:06] and to work

[00:22:07] for his good pleasure.

[00:22:09] Now,

[00:22:10] I gotta say,

[00:22:10] this is one of the most

[00:22:11] encouraging aspects

[00:22:12] of sanctification

[00:22:13] to me

[00:22:14] because when I feel

[00:22:15] as though I'm never gonna change,

[00:22:17] that I'm stuck,

[00:22:18] the good news

[00:22:19] is that God's enabling grace

[00:22:21] continues to be poured out

[00:22:22] in measure for me

[00:22:23] so that I might be conformed

[00:22:25] to the image of Christ.

[00:22:26] Even when I am not working,

[00:22:28] when I am not training,

[00:22:30] he is at work.

[00:22:32] Ephesians 2.10

[00:22:33] speaks to the work

[00:22:34] that he's doing.

[00:22:35] It says,

[00:22:35] you are his workmanship

[00:22:37] created in Christ Jesus

[00:22:38] for good works,

[00:22:40] which God prepared beforehand

[00:22:41] that we should walk in them.

[00:22:43] As many of you know,

[00:22:43] that word workmanship

[00:22:44] is the Greek word poema,

[00:22:46] which we get our English word poem from.

[00:22:48] It means work of art.

[00:22:50] That God is making us

[00:22:52] and shaping us

[00:22:53] just as a potter does

[00:22:55] with the clay

[00:22:56] or as a sculptor does

[00:22:58] with a sculpture

[00:22:59] and trimming off

[00:23:01] and chipping off those areas

[00:23:03] in order to reveal

[00:23:05] what is there.

[00:23:07] God is working.

[00:23:08] He is moving

[00:23:09] and he is shaping us.

[00:23:11] He is doing a great work.

[00:23:14] He does this

[00:23:15] through his Holy Spirit

[00:23:15] convicting us of sin,

[00:23:17] saying,

[00:23:17] no, that's not what I have for you.

[00:23:19] That's not what I want you to do.

[00:23:20] He gently points to our flaws

[00:23:22] and shortcomings.

[00:23:23] He's forgiving us

[00:23:25] and restoring us

[00:23:25] over and over again,

[00:23:26] not because he has to,

[00:23:27] but because he loves us

[00:23:28] and doesn't want us

[00:23:29] to settle in where we are

[00:23:30] and grow complacent.

[00:23:33] He's not finished

[00:23:34] painting the masterpiece yet.

[00:23:37] It is a process.

[00:23:38] It's gradual.

[00:23:40] And it's a result of his work in us.

[00:23:43] And number three,

[00:23:44] it's also a result

[00:23:46] of our participation

[00:23:48] in our sanctification.

[00:23:49] We participate

[00:23:50] in our sanctification.

[00:23:52] Look again at verse 12

[00:23:53] of chapter 2 in Philippians.

[00:23:55] Work out your own salvation

[00:23:57] with fear and trembling.

[00:23:59] Friends,

[00:23:59] there is a part

[00:24:01] that we play.

[00:24:02] Ephesians 2.10 closes

[00:24:03] by saying that we should walk

[00:24:05] in these good works.

[00:24:07] In 2 Peter 1.5,

[00:24:09] for this very reason,

[00:24:10] make every effort

[00:24:11] to add to your faith goodness.

[00:24:13] Now this is participatory language.

[00:24:17] This isn't us

[00:24:17] on the sidelines

[00:24:18] just going,

[00:24:19] all right, Lord,

[00:24:20] you know,

[00:24:20] whenever you're going

[00:24:21] to do it, great.

[00:24:22] Over time,

[00:24:23] you know,

[00:24:23] I'm going to be changed

[00:24:24] and transformed.

[00:24:25] I hope you do it

[00:24:27] before I die.

[00:24:28] No, this is us

[00:24:28] actively involved

[00:24:30] and intentional

[00:24:31] with the work

[00:24:32] God is doing.

[00:24:34] So what does it mean?

[00:24:35] By remembering

[00:24:36] our true identity,

[00:24:37] we get the privilege

[00:24:38] of partnering with God

[00:24:39] in the work

[00:24:40] of conforming us

[00:24:41] to the image

[00:24:41] of his son.

[00:24:43] And it takes a willingness

[00:24:44] on our part

[00:24:45] to say no

[00:24:46] to sin actively,

[00:24:47] to not let it reign

[00:24:48] in our mortal bodies,

[00:24:50] to be serious

[00:24:52] about how sin

[00:24:53] will slow

[00:24:54] the sanctification process

[00:24:56] in our life.

[00:24:58] You know,

[00:24:59] Paul's word

[00:24:59] to not let it reign,

[00:25:01] to put it to death,

[00:25:03] I think the word

[00:25:04] is to mutilate sin.

[00:25:06] Too many of us,

[00:25:07] maybe we're trying

[00:25:08] to manage our sin.

[00:25:09] And the word is

[00:25:10] we need to mutilate it.

[00:25:11] We need to just

[00:25:11] put it to death

[00:25:12] and say,

[00:25:12] no, this is not

[00:25:13] what God has for me.

[00:25:15] We're going to talk

[00:25:16] more about how

[00:25:17] the Lord does that

[00:25:18] in our lives.

[00:25:20] But it's not just

[00:25:20] saying no.

[00:25:22] Our participation

[00:25:22] in the work

[00:25:23] of sanctification

[00:25:24] is not just saying

[00:25:25] no to the flesh

[00:25:26] and no to the things

[00:25:27] of the world

[00:25:28] and no to those

[00:25:29] former traits

[00:25:30] and characteristics

[00:25:31] that used to

[00:25:32] mark our lives

[00:25:33] before coming to him.

[00:25:34] It's also saying

[00:25:34] yes to his spirit.

[00:25:36] It's also saying,

[00:25:37] yes, Lord,

[00:25:38] I invite you in

[00:25:39] to start to produce

[00:25:41] in me things

[00:25:42] that weren't there

[00:25:42] before.

[00:25:44] To start to produce

[00:25:45] in me fruit.

[00:25:46] You know,

[00:25:47] this fruit

[00:25:47] that God produces,

[00:25:49] Galatians 5,

[00:25:51] you know,

[00:25:51] it's an organic process.

[00:25:52] It's not a work

[00:25:53] of striving.

[00:25:54] It's a work

[00:25:55] that we do

[00:25:56] as we yield

[00:25:57] and we surrender

[00:25:58] to his Holy Spirit.

[00:26:00] As I've heard it said,

[00:26:01] you never go up

[00:26:01] to a tree

[00:26:02] and hear the tree

[00:26:03] going,

[00:26:05] you know,

[00:26:06] never straining.

[00:26:07] We don't see trees

[00:26:08] straining like,

[00:26:09] oh,

[00:26:09] and then pop,

[00:26:11] there's a fruit.

[00:26:11] No,

[00:26:12] this is a natural process.

[00:26:14] This is an organic process

[00:26:17] of growth

[00:26:17] that happens

[00:26:19] as a result

[00:26:20] of the right conditions,

[00:26:21] the right food,

[00:26:23] the right sun.

[00:26:25] Now,

[00:26:27] I like what Augustine

[00:26:28] said about this.

[00:26:29] Without him,

[00:26:30] we can't,

[00:26:30] but without us,

[00:26:32] he won't.

[00:26:34] You see,

[00:26:35] the Lord wants

[00:26:36] to partner with us

[00:26:38] in this work

[00:26:38] of transformation.

[00:26:40] He invites us

[00:26:41] into this journey.

[00:26:43] And if that sounds

[00:26:44] like a work

[00:26:46] for you,

[00:26:48] well,

[00:26:48] Paul uses the word

[00:26:49] that we need

[00:26:50] to work out

[00:26:51] because it's God

[00:26:52] who's working in us.

[00:26:54] But again,

[00:26:55] the foundation

[00:26:56] for this work

[00:26:57] is not that we are

[00:26:58] trying to earn.

[00:27:00] As Dallas Willard said,

[00:27:02] grace is opposed

[00:27:02] to earning,

[00:27:03] not effort.

[00:27:05] And what I'm not

[00:27:05] talking about

[00:27:06] is willpower.

[00:27:07] This isn't,

[00:27:07] all right guys,

[00:27:08] we just gotta hear

[00:27:09] a sermon

[00:27:09] and then go home

[00:27:10] and then just commit

[00:27:11] to I'm not gonna

[00:27:12] look at porn,

[00:27:13] I'm not gonna drink,

[00:27:14] you know,

[00:27:14] over drink,

[00:27:14] I'm not gonna

[00:27:15] talk to my wife

[00:27:16] that way.

[00:27:17] It's not just

[00:27:18] trying to willpower

[00:27:19] and just muscle it.

[00:27:21] How long does

[00:27:22] that last us?

[00:27:24] I mean,

[00:27:24] we know every

[00:27:25] January 1st,

[00:27:26] what do we get

[00:27:27] three weeks in

[00:27:28] to our New Year's

[00:27:29] resolutions

[00:27:29] before it's like,

[00:27:30] well,

[00:27:31] I think those were

[00:27:32] more like suggestions

[00:27:34] than resolutions.

[00:27:36] James Brian Smith,

[00:27:38] who's really,

[00:27:38] who's really

[00:27:39] been used by the Lord

[00:27:41] to help shape

[00:27:42] my understanding

[00:27:42] of the sanctification

[00:27:44] process

[00:27:44] and the formation

[00:27:45] process

[00:27:46] in his series

[00:27:47] The Good and Beautiful God.

[00:27:50] He talks about

[00:27:50] the will,

[00:27:52] really,

[00:27:53] the will

[00:27:54] does not have

[00:27:55] the power

[00:27:55] to change us.

[00:27:56] That's not

[00:27:57] its purpose.

[00:28:00] the will

[00:28:01] has the capacity

[00:28:02] to choose.

[00:28:04] So today,

[00:28:05] you know,

[00:28:06] I chose this color

[00:28:07] shirt

[00:28:08] by my will.

[00:28:10] No one forced it

[00:28:11] on me.

[00:28:11] I chose this color

[00:28:12] shirt.

[00:28:13] But if you're

[00:28:14] taking x-ray

[00:28:15] of your body,

[00:28:15] you're not gonna

[00:28:15] find your will

[00:28:16] somewhere,

[00:28:17] right?

[00:28:18] Think of the will

[00:28:18] like riding a horse.

[00:28:20] The horse doesn't

[00:28:21] choose where to go.

[00:28:22] I mean,

[00:28:22] some may.

[00:28:23] That's not a good

[00:28:23] horse to ride,

[00:28:24] not one I'm gonna

[00:28:24] ride,

[00:28:25] but it goes

[00:28:26] in whatever direction

[00:28:27] the rider tells

[00:28:28] it to go.

[00:28:29] And the will

[00:28:30] kind of works

[00:28:30] like that.

[00:28:31] It's influenced

[00:28:32] by our mind,

[00:28:34] our body,

[00:28:35] and our social

[00:28:36] context.

[00:28:37] When we're hungry,

[00:28:38] what happens?

[00:28:39] Well,

[00:28:39] it expresses its need

[00:28:41] in the mind

[00:28:41] through feelings,

[00:28:42] hunger.

[00:28:43] It alerts

[00:28:44] the mind

[00:28:45] to send a message

[00:28:46] to the will,

[00:28:47] go to In-N-Out

[00:28:48] after church.

[00:28:50] But our will

[00:28:51] can only,

[00:28:53] I'm sorry,

[00:28:54] our will can also

[00:28:54] be influenced

[00:28:55] by our social context,

[00:28:56] which we call

[00:28:57] peer pressure.

[00:28:58] So change is not

[00:28:59] a matter of the will.

[00:29:00] That's not,

[00:29:00] it's not pull yourself

[00:29:01] up by your bootstraps,

[00:29:02] just muscle it.

[00:29:04] Change happens

[00:29:04] when these other

[00:29:06] outside influencers

[00:29:07] are modified.

[00:29:09] And I wanna talk

[00:29:10] about that.

[00:29:10] Hopefully we can make

[00:29:11] it a little more clear.

[00:29:13] It's when new ideas,

[00:29:15] practices,

[00:29:15] and social settings

[00:29:16] are adopted.

[00:29:17] That's when change

[00:29:18] happens.

[00:29:20] So this isn't

[00:29:21] trying harder,

[00:29:23] but it's training.

[00:29:26] The problem

[00:29:27] isn't that

[00:29:28] we aren't trying,

[00:29:29] it's that

[00:29:29] we're not training.

[00:29:31] Because,

[00:29:32] like Paul would say

[00:29:33] in 1 Corinthians 9,

[00:29:34] therefore I do not run

[00:29:35] like someone

[00:29:36] running aimlessly.

[00:29:38] I do not fight

[00:29:39] like a boxer

[00:29:40] beating the air.

[00:29:40] Instead,

[00:29:41] I discipline my body

[00:29:42] and I bring it

[00:29:43] under strict control

[00:29:44] so that after

[00:29:46] preaching to others,

[00:29:47] I myself may not

[00:29:48] become disqualified.

[00:29:49] Paul knew

[00:29:50] that there was

[00:29:51] a measure of training

[00:29:52] that was required

[00:29:53] for him to follow

[00:29:54] in the way of Jesus.

[00:29:56] For this,

[00:29:57] I think writer

[00:29:57] and theologian

[00:29:58] Dallas Willard

[00:29:59] is really helpful.

[00:30:00] He wrote extensively

[00:30:01] on sanctification

[00:30:02] and spiritual formation

[00:30:03] and how God

[00:30:04] changes and transforms us.

[00:30:06] He found four elements

[00:30:07] are key to the process

[00:30:08] of change

[00:30:09] and to Christ's likeness.

[00:30:10] And I wanna share

[00:30:10] this with you.

[00:30:11] There's a graphic,

[00:30:12] it's called

[00:30:12] the triangle

[00:30:13] of transformation.

[00:30:15] So you see here

[00:30:16] in the middle

[00:30:16] is the Holy Spirit

[00:30:17] and he's the one

[00:30:19] that guides

[00:30:19] and directs

[00:30:20] our transformation.

[00:30:21] Any change

[00:30:22] that we see

[00:30:22] into Christ's likeness

[00:30:24] is guided

[00:30:24] and centered

[00:30:25] by the Holy Spirit.

[00:30:27] That's important.

[00:30:27] But what God uses

[00:30:29] is truth.

[00:30:30] Truth coming

[00:30:31] into our hearts

[00:30:32] and our minds

[00:30:32] by his word

[00:30:33] that are reinforced

[00:30:35] through different practices.

[00:30:36] These are things

[00:30:37] like reading your Bible,

[00:30:39] praying,

[00:30:40] spending time

[00:30:41] in fellowship

[00:30:42] and then

[00:30:43] it ends

[00:30:44] with community.

[00:30:45] That these are

[00:30:46] practices

[00:30:47] that are worked out

[00:30:48] and lived out

[00:30:49] in a congregation

[00:30:51] in a group

[00:30:52] of like-minded people

[00:30:53] that can encourage you

[00:30:54] and that can spur you on.

[00:30:56] So let me break these down

[00:30:57] a little bit more.

[00:30:59] Truth.

[00:31:00] What we mean by truth

[00:31:02] and how we can change

[00:31:03] as a result of truth

[00:31:04] is that

[00:31:05] we bring Scripture

[00:31:06] to bear

[00:31:07] on our hearts

[00:31:07] and minds.

[00:31:08] It means identifying

[00:31:10] the stories

[00:31:10] and narratives

[00:31:11] that we've adopted

[00:31:12] that are contrary

[00:31:12] to the truths

[00:31:13] of Scripture.

[00:31:14] The stories

[00:31:15] that we've

[00:31:16] just learned

[00:31:17] through habits,

[00:31:19] through traditions,

[00:31:20] through rituals,

[00:31:20] through our phones,

[00:31:22] through news,

[00:31:23] through media,

[00:31:23] we are constantly

[00:31:24] being formed

[00:31:25] or trying to be formed.

[00:31:27] Whether it's being formed

[00:31:29] by the world

[00:31:29] or it's being formed

[00:31:31] by other ideologies.

[00:31:33] And so there's

[00:31:34] a deformation

[00:31:35] that is constantly

[00:31:36] happening around us

[00:31:38] and that is why

[00:31:38] it's so important

[00:31:39] that we allow

[00:31:40] God's truth

[00:31:41] to continue

[00:31:41] to wash over

[00:31:42] our hearts.

[00:31:43] Paul says this

[00:31:44] in Romans 12,

[00:31:45] I appeal to you

[00:31:46] therefore,

[00:31:47] brothers,

[00:31:47] by the mercies

[00:31:48] of God,

[00:31:48] present your bodies

[00:31:49] as a living sacrifice,

[00:31:52] holy and acceptable

[00:31:53] to God,

[00:31:53] which is your

[00:31:54] spiritual worship.

[00:31:55] Do not be conformed

[00:31:56] to this world

[00:31:57] but be transformed

[00:31:58] by the renewal

[00:31:59] of your mind

[00:32:00] that by testing

[00:32:01] you may discern

[00:32:02] what is the will

[00:32:03] of God,

[00:32:03] what is good

[00:32:03] and acceptable

[00:32:04] and perfect.

[00:32:06] Because of the

[00:32:06] counter formation

[00:32:07] that's happening

[00:32:08] all around us

[00:32:09] every day,

[00:32:10] we need to let

[00:32:11] the truth

[00:32:11] of the gospel

[00:32:12] saturate our minds

[00:32:13] and our hearts

[00:32:13] to the point

[00:32:14] where it doesn't

[00:32:15] just become real

[00:32:15] but it becomes realized.

[00:32:19] It doesn't just

[00:32:19] become a truth

[00:32:20] that we know

[00:32:21] but it's a truth

[00:32:22] that we've embodied.

[00:32:24] I remember years ago

[00:32:26] we were invited

[00:32:27] to a birthday party

[00:32:28] for some friends

[00:32:29] and it was

[00:32:30] at a ropes course

[00:32:31] up in the Santa Cruz

[00:32:32] mountains

[00:32:33] and I think

[00:32:34] our oldest son

[00:32:35] Cannon was about

[00:32:35] five at that time

[00:32:36] and so we went

[00:32:38] and he saw

[00:32:40] this ropes course

[00:32:40] take you 30 feet

[00:32:42] up in the air,

[00:32:42] you walk across

[00:32:43] these thin ropes

[00:32:44] and you know

[00:32:45] you're harnessed in

[00:32:46] and it looked

[00:32:48] pretty scary

[00:32:49] and it kind of was

[00:32:50] but he said

[00:32:51] he wanted to do it

[00:32:52] so we got him

[00:32:53] in a harness

[00:32:54] and I got in a harness

[00:32:55] too because I was

[00:32:56] going to go up

[00:32:57] there with him

[00:32:57] and we were excited

[00:32:59] until we got up there

[00:33:01] at least

[00:33:01] he wasn't super excited

[00:33:03] once he got up there

[00:33:05] and it took us

[00:33:06] some time

[00:33:06] to work through

[00:33:07] the course

[00:33:08] because it's scary

[00:33:09] and you're all going

[00:33:11] yeah he was five years old

[00:33:12] okay we know

[00:33:13] we've learned

[00:33:14] the Lord is sanctifying us

[00:33:16] but so there we are

[00:33:17] we're up there

[00:33:18] and I'm just like

[00:33:19] okay one option

[00:33:20] is we could just

[00:33:20] kind of jump down

[00:33:22] and you know

[00:33:22] let the harness

[00:33:23] kind of carry us down

[00:33:24] or whatever

[00:33:24] and that was not one

[00:33:26] that was not a good

[00:33:26] option for Cannon

[00:33:27] he's like nope

[00:33:28] dad we're not doing that

[00:33:29] so it's like

[00:33:30] the only way to go

[00:33:31] was to go through

[00:33:31] the ropes course

[00:33:33] so it took us some time

[00:33:34] I won't tell you how long

[00:33:34] but it took us some time

[00:33:36] to work through it

[00:33:37] and we got to the end

[00:33:38] and it was

[00:33:39] it was that moment

[00:33:40] where you kind of

[00:33:41] have to jump off

[00:33:42] and let the harness

[00:33:42] just like carry you

[00:33:43] down on a zip line

[00:33:45] and I was just like

[00:33:46] I don't know

[00:33:47] I don't know

[00:33:47] if he's going to be

[00:33:47] able to do it

[00:33:49] and we stood there

[00:33:49] for some time

[00:33:50] again I won't tell you

[00:33:51] how long

[00:33:51] but it was some time

[00:33:52] he needed some time

[00:33:53] and then he finally

[00:33:54] jumped off

[00:33:54] and he went down

[00:33:55] and he got all the way down

[00:33:57] and then I jumped off

[00:33:58] too and I went down

[00:33:59] and I was just like

[00:34:00] okay

[00:34:01] well lesson learned

[00:34:02] we're probably not going

[00:34:03] to do that one again

[00:34:04] so I say hey buddy

[00:34:05] you doing okay

[00:34:05] do we want to go get

[00:34:06] some ice cream

[00:34:07] and he's like dad

[00:34:07] I want to do it again

[00:34:09] what

[00:34:11] oh my goodness

[00:34:12] so we went up

[00:34:12] and I think we went

[00:34:13] two or three more times

[00:34:16] what happened

[00:34:18] well

[00:34:20] I told him so many times

[00:34:21] buddy it's going to be okay

[00:34:22] if you fall

[00:34:23] it's going to

[00:34:23] there's a harness

[00:34:24] that's going to hold you

[00:34:25] you're going to be safe

[00:34:26] but it wasn't until

[00:34:27] he fully realized

[00:34:29] it himself

[00:34:30] to where he embodied

[00:34:31] that truth

[00:34:33] that it gave him

[00:34:34] confidence

[00:34:36] in the face

[00:34:37] of fear

[00:34:37] in the face

[00:34:38] of something

[00:34:39] that a few minutes

[00:34:40] ago was impossible

[00:34:41] all of a sudden

[00:34:42] he was empowered

[00:34:44] to do that thing

[00:34:45] and guys

[00:34:46] that's what I mean

[00:34:46] when we talk about

[00:34:47] the truth of scripture

[00:34:48] it's not just

[00:34:49] I gotta read my devos

[00:34:50] and I gotta

[00:34:50] but it's actually

[00:34:51] looking and going

[00:34:52] man this is the true story

[00:34:54] about who God is

[00:34:55] and who I am

[00:34:56] this is the story

[00:34:57] of the good life

[00:34:58] that God wants to

[00:34:59] impart into me

[00:35:00] to where I can believe

[00:35:02] the things

[00:35:03] that he wants

[00:35:04] to speak

[00:35:04] over my life

[00:35:06] to where I can know

[00:35:07] God's love is real

[00:35:08] and his acceptance

[00:35:09] of me

[00:35:09] is real enough

[00:35:11] that it breaks me

[00:35:12] from my need

[00:35:13] to seek the approval

[00:35:14] of others

[00:35:14] to where

[00:35:18] the joy

[00:35:19] and the beauty

[00:35:21] that is found

[00:35:21] in Jesus

[00:35:22] is greater

[00:35:22] than the idol

[00:35:23] of pleasure

[00:35:24] that I go to

[00:35:25] to feel accepted

[00:35:26] and to feel affirmed

[00:35:28] you see

[00:35:29] that's where the change

[00:35:30] starts to happen

[00:35:30] where it starts

[00:35:31] to unseat

[00:35:33] the other

[00:35:33] desires

[00:35:34] and passions

[00:35:35] and loves

[00:35:36] that are

[00:35:38] superseding

[00:35:38] the love

[00:35:39] that God has

[00:35:40] for us

[00:35:40] that's the process

[00:35:41] of getting God's truth

[00:35:42] deep into our bodies

[00:35:44] deep into our hearts

[00:35:45] deep into our souls

[00:35:47] number two

[00:35:49] practices

[00:35:49] what are the practices

[00:35:51] well

[00:35:51] we've referred to these

[00:35:53] as the great

[00:35:53] Christians for years

[00:35:54] have referred to these

[00:35:55] as the graces

[00:35:56] the graces

[00:35:57] that God gives us

[00:35:58] in order to grow

[00:35:59] I like 2 Peter 3

[00:36:00] says

[00:36:00] but grow in the grace

[00:36:01] and knowledge

[00:36:02] of our Lord

[00:36:03] and Savior

[00:36:03] Jesus Christ

[00:36:04] to him be the glory

[00:36:06] both now and forever

[00:36:07] amen

[00:36:07] the practices

[00:36:08] help take the truths

[00:36:09] of scripture

[00:36:10] and then bring them

[00:36:11] to bear

[00:36:12] onto our hearts

[00:36:13] and minds

[00:36:14] and our bodies

[00:36:14] the practices

[00:36:15] of spiritual

[00:36:16] we call often

[00:36:17] spiritual disciplines

[00:36:18] these are ways

[00:36:19] to embody

[00:36:20] the truths of scripture

[00:36:21] so as I mentioned

[00:36:22] Bible reading

[00:36:23] sitting down

[00:36:24] taking in God's word

[00:36:26] into our lives

[00:36:27] on a regular basis

[00:36:28] prayer

[00:36:28] spending time

[00:36:29] communicating to God

[00:36:31] worshiping God

[00:36:32] praising God

[00:36:33] for who he is

[00:36:33] but also listening

[00:36:34] to the Lord

[00:36:35] which would include

[00:36:36] silence

[00:36:38] tuning out the other

[00:36:39] distractions

[00:36:39] and the other voices

[00:36:40] that we're constantly

[00:36:42] being pulled at

[00:36:45] fasting

[00:36:45] something we're doing

[00:36:46] this month

[00:36:47] why are we doing that

[00:36:48] to set aside

[00:36:48] a specific time

[00:36:49] to be able to

[00:36:50] press in deeper

[00:36:51] to the Lord

[00:36:52] and pray

[00:36:52] for the future

[00:36:53] of the church

[00:36:54] but fasting

[00:36:55] has many different

[00:36:55] implications

[00:36:56] to be able

[00:36:57] to deny

[00:36:57] yourself

[00:36:58] something

[00:36:58] in order

[00:36:59] to know

[00:37:00] hey

[00:37:00] my body

[00:37:01] doesn't have

[00:37:01] to rule me

[00:37:02] or control me

[00:37:03] the drives

[00:37:04] and desires

[00:37:05] of my body

[00:37:06] I can train

[00:37:08] Sabbath

[00:37:09] slowing down

[00:37:10] taking a rest

[00:37:12] not working

[00:37:14] every single

[00:37:14] moment of every day

[00:37:15] or trying to produce

[00:37:16] with every spare

[00:37:18] minute that we have

[00:37:19] these are the ways

[00:37:20] that we

[00:37:21] habituate

[00:37:22] and train

[00:37:22] our hearts

[00:37:23] towards the way

[00:37:24] of Jesus

[00:37:24] number three

[00:37:25] community

[00:37:25] and I think

[00:37:26] this is one

[00:37:26] of the most

[00:37:29] missed elements

[00:37:29] in my

[00:37:30] discipleship journey

[00:37:31] with Jesus

[00:37:31] early on

[00:37:32] I think

[00:37:33] because often

[00:37:33] when I heard

[00:37:34] sanctification

[00:37:34] what I heard

[00:37:35] is that this

[00:37:36] is an individual

[00:37:37] approach

[00:37:38] I need to do this

[00:37:39] I gotta get

[00:37:40] my teachings

[00:37:41] I gotta get

[00:37:42] my time

[00:37:42] with the Lord

[00:37:43] and this is me

[00:37:44] and the Lord

[00:37:45] but spiritual formation

[00:37:47] happens most profoundly

[00:37:48] in the context

[00:37:49] of a group

[00:37:50] because it allows

[00:37:51] others to spur us on

[00:37:52] it allows others

[00:37:53] to see our blind spots

[00:37:55] and if we're honest

[00:37:56] and if we're open

[00:37:56] for someone to say

[00:37:58] hey

[00:37:58] I don't

[00:37:59] I don't think

[00:38:00] that's what Jesus

[00:38:01] has for you

[00:38:02] and to be humble

[00:38:03] enough to say

[00:38:04] get out of my life

[00:38:05] bro

[00:38:05] no I'm just kidding

[00:38:06] but to say

[00:38:07] hey

[00:38:09] maybe you see

[00:38:10] something I don't

[00:38:11] that's the definition

[00:38:12] of a blind spot

[00:38:13] you can't see it

[00:38:15] so by inviting

[00:38:16] others in

[00:38:17] to know us deeply

[00:38:19] and to do what

[00:38:19] Hebrews 10 24

[00:38:20] would say

[00:38:21] let us consider

[00:38:22] how we may spur

[00:38:23] one another on

[00:38:24] to love

[00:38:24] and good deeds

[00:38:25] man I am so grateful

[00:38:28] for the godly men

[00:38:29] and women

[00:38:30] that God has used

[00:38:30] to spur me on

[00:38:31] to love and good deeds

[00:38:32] I wouldn't be where

[00:38:33] I am today without them

[00:38:35] and I want you to experience

[00:38:36] that kind of change

[00:38:37] in your spiritual life

[00:38:38] if you want to overcome sin

[00:38:40] grow in obedience

[00:38:41] and holiness

[00:38:41] and live out the good things

[00:38:42] that God has planned

[00:38:43] you can't do it alone

[00:38:45] it's just going to be

[00:38:46] too heavy

[00:38:47] you need the brothers

[00:38:48] and sisters of Christ

[00:38:49] to come alongside you

[00:38:50] to build you up

[00:38:51] to encourage you

[00:38:52] to call you out

[00:38:53] when you need to be called out

[00:38:55] invite others in

[00:38:56] not just a little bit

[00:38:57] be known

[00:39:00] there are over 51

[00:39:01] one another commands

[00:39:02] in scripture

[00:39:03] that we're called

[00:39:04] to obey

[00:39:05] none of these

[00:39:06] can we live out

[00:39:07] on our own

[00:39:08] we need to be in community

[00:39:10] to be a fully

[00:39:11] mature believer

[00:39:13] walking in the fullness

[00:39:14] of Christ

[00:39:15] we need each other

[00:39:16] last one

[00:39:17] Holy Spirit

[00:39:18] the last and most important

[00:39:19] element of transformation

[00:39:20] is the Holy Spirit

[00:39:22] and his work in us

[00:39:23] John 14 26 says

[00:39:25] but the advocate

[00:39:26] the Holy Spirit

[00:39:27] whom the Father

[00:39:28] will send in my name

[00:39:29] will teach you all things

[00:39:30] and will remind you

[00:39:31] of everything

[00:39:32] I have said to you

[00:39:33] the gift of the Holy Spirit

[00:39:34] is we have him

[00:39:35] as our guide

[00:39:36] our spiritual advisor

[00:39:37] and comforter

[00:39:37] along the journey

[00:39:38] of sanctification

[00:39:40] all that we do

[00:39:40] in receiving

[00:39:41] the truth of scripture

[00:39:42] walking it out

[00:39:43] in regular spiritual practices

[00:39:44] and meeting together

[00:39:45] in community

[00:39:46] needs to be empowered

[00:39:47] by the Spirit

[00:39:47] if we're to experience

[00:39:49] real lasting change

[00:39:51] I like what

[00:39:52] James Bryan Smith

[00:39:53] again

[00:39:53] author of The Good

[00:39:54] and Beautiful God

[00:39:55] says

[00:39:55] the Holy Spirit

[00:39:56] is our unseen teacher

[00:39:57] who points us

[00:39:58] to Jesus

[00:39:59] and reminds us

[00:40:00] of his words

[00:40:01] in this sense

[00:40:02] the Holy Spirit

[00:40:03] is the one

[00:40:03] who is helping us

[00:40:04] change our narratives

[00:40:05] he leads us away

[00:40:06] from false narratives

[00:40:07] and replaces them

[00:40:09] with true narratives

[00:40:12] the last thing

[00:40:13] I want to look at

[00:40:14] as we've seen

[00:40:15] the foundation

[00:40:16] for change

[00:40:17] the process

[00:40:18] for change

[00:40:19] I want to look

[00:40:20] at the invitation

[00:40:21] to change

[00:40:22] what's at stake

[00:40:22] if I don't pursue

[00:40:23] a life of sanctification

[00:40:24] into the likeness

[00:40:25] of Jesus

[00:40:26] how

[00:40:26] how

[00:40:28] how can I experience

[00:40:30] a deeper abiding life

[00:40:31] that Jesus said

[00:40:32] was possible

[00:40:32] how can I

[00:40:33] see the fruit

[00:40:34] of God's Spirit

[00:40:35] worked out

[00:40:36] growing in my life

[00:40:37] well at the heart

[00:40:39] of the Christian

[00:40:39] sanctification

[00:40:41] is a desire

[00:40:42] to understand

[00:40:43] and surrender

[00:40:44] to all that God

[00:40:44] wants to do

[00:40:45] in our hearts

[00:40:46] and lives

[00:40:46] it's an invitation

[00:40:48] to experience

[00:40:49] deep change

[00:40:50] in our heart

[00:40:51] and life

[00:40:52] and

[00:40:53] greater communion

[00:40:54] with Christ

[00:40:55] as a result

[00:40:55] I think there's

[00:40:57] no better picture

[00:40:57] of this

[00:40:58] than in John 15

[00:40:59] where Jesus

[00:41:00] is talking

[00:41:00] to his disciples

[00:41:02] and he says

[00:41:02] abide in me

[00:41:03] and I in you

[00:41:05] as you branch

[00:41:06] as the branch

[00:41:06] cannot bear fruit

[00:41:07] by itself

[00:41:08] we cannot

[00:41:09] unless it abides

[00:41:10] in the vine

[00:41:11] that dependency

[00:41:13] neither can you

[00:41:14] unless you abide

[00:41:15] in me

[00:41:15] I am the vine

[00:41:16] you are the branches

[00:41:17] whoever abides

[00:41:18] in me

[00:41:18] and I in him

[00:41:19] he it is

[00:41:20] that bears much

[00:41:21] fruit

[00:41:21] for apart from me

[00:41:22] you can do nothing

[00:41:24] he goes on

[00:41:24] and he says

[00:41:25] as the Father

[00:41:25] has loved me

[00:41:26] so I have loved

[00:41:27] you

[00:41:27] abide in my love

[00:41:28] love

[00:41:28] if you keep

[00:41:29] my commandments

[00:41:29] you'll abide

[00:41:30] in my love

[00:41:30] just as I've kept

[00:41:31] my Father's commandments

[00:41:32] and abide in his love

[00:41:33] these things

[00:41:34] I've spoken to you

[00:41:35] that my joy

[00:41:35] may be in you

[00:41:36] and that your joy

[00:41:37] may be full

[00:41:38] what's at stake

[00:41:40] if we don't

[00:41:41] follow in the way

[00:41:42] of Jesus

[00:41:43] and seek to be

[00:41:44] conformed to his image

[00:41:45] every single day

[00:41:46] well for one

[00:41:47] we're not gonna

[00:41:48] be able to do

[00:41:49] the things

[00:41:50] that he's calling us

[00:41:51] to do

[00:41:51] we just can't

[00:41:52] we can't do it

[00:41:52] on our own

[00:41:54] and God is gonna

[00:41:55] be producing

[00:41:56] God is going

[00:41:57] to be working

[00:41:57] in us

[00:41:58] but if we say

[00:41:59] God you know what

[00:42:00] I'm kind of tired

[00:42:01] I'm worn out

[00:42:02] you know

[00:42:02] I'm just gonna

[00:42:03] kind of sail

[00:42:05] then man we're gonna

[00:42:06] miss out

[00:42:06] on the good work

[00:42:08] that God has

[00:42:09] not just for us

[00:42:11] but for others

[00:42:12] around us

[00:42:14] you see

[00:42:16] I think in this passage

[00:42:17] we also find

[00:42:19] that there's some

[00:42:19] other things

[00:42:20] that we're gonna

[00:42:21] miss out on

[00:42:23] and the process

[00:42:24] of sanctification

[00:42:25] maybe one way

[00:42:26] to say it is this

[00:42:27] what are some signs

[00:42:28] that I am being

[00:42:28] sanctified

[00:42:29] that I am being

[00:42:30] formed

[00:42:30] well Jesus says

[00:42:31] in verse 10

[00:42:32] if you keep my

[00:42:33] commandments

[00:42:33] you'll abide in

[00:42:34] my love

[00:42:34] just as I've

[00:42:35] kept my Father's

[00:42:36] commandments

[00:42:36] and abide in

[00:42:37] his love

[00:42:37] I think love

[00:42:38] we'll miss out

[00:42:39] on growing

[00:42:39] into people

[00:42:40] of love

[00:42:42] now that might

[00:42:42] sound kind of

[00:42:43] like oh

[00:42:44] up in the air

[00:42:45] somewhere

[00:42:45] what do you

[00:42:45] mean people

[00:42:46] of love

[00:42:46] and what I

[00:42:47] mean about

[00:42:49] being people

[00:42:49] of love

[00:42:50] I love the

[00:42:51] definition

[00:42:51] that love

[00:42:52] is to will

[00:42:53] the good

[00:42:53] of another

[00:42:55] you see

[00:42:56] the mark

[00:42:56] of a life

[00:42:56] that's growing

[00:42:57] more and more

[00:42:57] like Jesus

[00:42:58] is love

[00:43:01] look at your

[00:43:02] life

[00:43:03] in the last

[00:43:04] year is your

[00:43:04] life being

[00:43:05] characterized

[00:43:05] by an increase

[00:43:06] in love

[00:43:07] for God

[00:43:07] and a love

[00:43:08] for others

[00:43:09] not just

[00:43:10] your family

[00:43:11] love for

[00:43:11] your family

[00:43:12] not just

[00:43:12] your close

[00:43:13] friends

[00:43:13] or your church

[00:43:14] or people

[00:43:15] that are easy

[00:43:16] to love

[00:43:16] like me

[00:43:17] but your

[00:43:18] enemies

[00:43:20] is love

[00:43:21] characterizing

[00:43:22] the way that

[00:43:22] you view

[00:43:23] the people

[00:43:23] that you're

[00:43:23] opposed to

[00:43:24] the people

[00:43:25] that you

[00:43:25] disagree

[00:43:25] with strongly

[00:43:27] is love

[00:43:28] marking

[00:43:29] the way that

[00:43:30] you view

[00:43:31] the world

[00:43:32] are you

[00:43:33] growing

[00:43:34] in an

[00:43:34] increasing

[00:43:34] measure

[00:43:35] with love

[00:43:36] because that's

[00:43:37] the mark

[00:43:37] of a disciple

[00:43:38] Jesus said

[00:43:39] they will

[00:43:39] know

[00:43:39] you

[00:43:40] by the

[00:43:41] love

[00:43:42] you have

[00:43:43] so friends

[00:43:44] if we

[00:43:45] choose to

[00:43:46] not

[00:43:47] engage

[00:43:47] in the life

[00:43:49] and the

[00:43:49] call

[00:43:49] to sanctification

[00:43:50] we're gonna

[00:43:51] miss out

[00:43:51] on experiencing

[00:43:52] a depth

[00:43:53] of love

[00:43:53] in our

[00:43:54] own lives

[00:43:54] and experiencing

[00:43:56] a depth

[00:43:57] of love

[00:43:57] that Christ

[00:43:58] is offering

[00:43:59] us

[00:43:59] it's there

[00:44:02] number

[00:44:02] two

[00:44:04] answered

[00:44:05] prayer

[00:44:05] Jesus said

[00:44:06] if you

[00:44:06] abide in

[00:44:06] me

[00:44:06] and my

[00:44:07] words

[00:44:07] abide in

[00:44:07] you

[00:44:07] ask

[00:44:08] whatever

[00:44:08] you

[00:44:08] wish

[00:44:08] and it

[00:44:09] will

[00:44:09] be

[00:44:09] done

[00:44:09] for

[00:44:09] you

[00:44:09] now

[00:44:09] this

[00:44:10] is

[00:44:10] kind

[00:44:10] of

[00:44:10] crazy

[00:44:10] like

[00:44:11] what

[00:44:12] and this

[00:44:13] isn't

[00:44:13] the blank

[00:44:13] check

[00:44:14] kind

[00:44:14] of

[00:44:14] thing

[00:44:14] well

[00:44:14] I'm

[00:44:15] gonna

[00:44:15] be

[00:44:15] sanctified

[00:44:15] so I

[00:44:16] can

[00:44:16] get a

[00:44:17] new

[00:44:17] car

[00:44:17] you

[00:44:17] know

[00:44:17] whatever

[00:44:18] it

[00:44:18] is

[00:44:19] the

[00:44:19] more

[00:44:20] we

[00:44:20] follow

[00:44:20] Jesus

[00:44:20] and are

[00:44:21] conformed

[00:44:21] to his

[00:44:22] image

[00:44:22] the

[00:44:22] more

[00:44:22] we

[00:44:23] will

[00:44:23] see

[00:44:23] answers

[00:44:23] to our

[00:44:24] prayers

[00:44:24] namely

[00:44:24] because

[00:44:25] the

[00:44:25] closer

[00:44:26] we

[00:44:26] get

[00:44:26] to him

[00:44:27] the

[00:44:27] more

[00:44:28] our

[00:44:28] prayers

[00:44:28] will

[00:44:28] be

[00:44:28] in line

[00:44:29] with

[00:44:29] his

[00:44:29] good

[00:44:29] and

[00:44:29] pleasing

[00:44:30] will

[00:44:30] for

[00:44:30] our

[00:44:30] life

[00:44:31] and

[00:44:32] God

[00:44:32] will

[00:44:32] confirm

[00:44:33] and

[00:44:33] he

[00:44:33] will

[00:44:33] say

[00:44:33] yes

[00:44:34] I've

[00:44:35] been

[00:44:35] waiting

[00:44:35] for

[00:44:35] you

[00:44:35] to

[00:44:36] ask

[00:44:36] and

[00:44:36] now

[00:44:36] I

[00:44:37] see

[00:44:37] you

[00:44:37] are

[00:44:37] ready

[00:44:38] for

[00:44:38] me

[00:44:38] to

[00:44:38] do

[00:44:38] this

[00:44:38] work

[00:44:39] in

[00:44:39] you

[00:44:39] to

[00:44:39] transform

[00:44:40] you

[00:44:41] as

[00:44:41] God

[00:44:41] transforms

[00:44:42] our

[00:44:42] desires

[00:44:43] and

[00:44:43] changes

[00:44:43] them

[00:44:44] to

[00:44:44] reflect

[00:44:44] his

[00:44:45] desires

[00:44:45] for

[00:44:45] us

[00:44:46] we

[00:44:47] will

[00:44:47] naturally

[00:44:47] pray

[00:44:47] to

[00:44:48] that

[00:44:48] end

[00:44:48] as

[00:44:48] we

[00:44:48] walk

[00:44:49] in

[00:44:49] his

[00:44:49] spirit

[00:44:49] and

[00:44:49] the

[00:44:49] last

[00:44:49] mark

[00:44:50] I

[00:44:50] think

[00:44:51] of

[00:44:51] abiding

[00:44:52] in

[00:44:52] Christ

[00:44:52] to

[00:44:53] see

[00:44:53] okay

[00:44:53] Lord

[00:44:53] am I

[00:44:54] being

[00:44:54] sanctified

[00:44:55] is

[00:44:55] joy

[00:44:56] a

[00:44:56] life

[00:44:57] that

[00:44:58] is

[00:45:06] I

[00:45:07] think

[00:45:07] you

[00:45:07] need

[00:45:07] to

[00:45:07] know

[00:45:08] that

[00:45:08] Jesus

[00:45:08] is

[00:45:08] after

[00:45:09] your

[00:45:09] joy

[00:45:10] he's

[00:45:11] after

[00:45:11] your

[00:45:11] joy

[00:45:12] I'm

[00:45:13] talking

[00:45:13] about

[00:45:13] a

[00:45:13] nice

[00:45:14] feeling

[00:45:14] I'm

[00:45:14] not

[00:45:14] talking

[00:45:15] about

[00:45:15] a

[00:45:15] oh

[00:45:16] God's

[00:45:17] gonna

[00:45:17] change

[00:45:17] me

[00:45:17] from

[00:45:17] a

[00:45:18] pessimist

[00:45:18] to

[00:45:18] an

[00:45:18] optimist

[00:45:19] I

[00:45:19] mean

[00:45:19] that

[00:45:19] might

[00:45:20] happen

[00:45:20] but

[00:45:21] I'm

[00:45:22] talking

[00:45:22] about

[00:45:22] a

[00:45:22] deep

[00:45:23] settled

[00:45:23] sense

[00:45:24] that

[00:45:25] I'm

[00:45:25] gonna

[00:45:25] be

[00:45:25] okay

[00:45:27] because

[00:45:27] I

[00:45:27] live

[00:45:28] in

[00:45:28] the

[00:45:28] unshakable

[00:45:28] kingdom

[00:45:29] of

[00:45:29] God

[00:45:29] and

[00:45:30] he's

[00:45:31] mine

[00:45:31] as

[00:45:32] someone

[00:45:32] has

[00:45:32] called

[00:45:33] this

[00:45:33] type

[00:45:33] of

[00:45:34] joy

[00:45:34] it's

[00:45:34] a

[00:45:34] settled

[00:45:34] assurance

[00:45:35] a

[00:45:35] quiet

[00:45:36] confidence

[00:45:36] and

[00:45:37] a

[00:45:37] choice

[00:45:37] to

[00:45:37] trust

[00:45:38] God

[00:45:38] no

[00:45:38] matter

[00:45:38] the

[00:45:39] circumstances

[00:45:41] man

[00:45:41] I

[00:45:42] want

[00:45:42] to

[00:45:42] grow

[00:45:42] in

[00:45:43] that

[00:45:43] kind

[00:45:43] of

[00:45:43] joy

[00:45:43] I

[00:45:45] want

[00:45:45] to

[00:45:45] experience

[00:45:46] God

[00:45:47] using

[00:45:48] me

[00:45:48] and

[00:45:48] answering

[00:45:50] my

[00:45:50] prayers

[00:45:50] and

[00:45:50] I

[00:45:51] want

[00:45:51] to

[00:45:51] grow

[00:45:51] in

[00:45:52] increasing

[00:45:52] measure

[00:45:52] in

[00:45:53] love

[00:45:54] as

[00:45:55] I

[00:45:55] disciple

[00:45:55] under

[00:45:55] him

[00:45:56] now

[00:45:57] again

[00:46:00] how

[00:46:01] does

[00:46:01] he

[00:46:01] do

[00:46:02] this

[00:46:02] let

[00:46:02] me

[00:46:02] just

[00:46:02] close

[00:46:03] I

[00:46:04] I've

[00:46:05] told

[00:46:05] this

[00:46:06] before

[00:46:06] but

[00:46:07] it's

[00:46:08] time

[00:46:08] for

[00:46:08] me

[00:46:08] to

[00:46:08] confess

[00:46:09] it

[00:46:09] again

[00:46:09] I'm

[00:46:09] really

[00:46:09] bad

[00:46:10] at

[00:46:10] remembering

[00:46:10] song

[00:46:10] lyrics

[00:46:12] my

[00:46:13] wife

[00:46:13] knows

[00:46:14] now

[00:46:14] my

[00:46:15] kids

[00:46:15] know

[00:46:28] I'm

[00:46:29] of

[00:46:30] belting

[00:46:30] belting

[00:46:30] it

[00:46:30] out

[00:46:31] and

[00:46:32] and

[00:46:32] then

[00:46:33] you

[00:46:33] know

[00:46:33] she'd

[00:46:34] be

[00:46:34] like

[00:46:34] hey

[00:46:35] what

[00:46:35] did

[00:46:35] you

[00:46:35] say

[00:46:36] what

[00:46:37] was

[00:46:37] that

[00:46:37] just

[00:46:38] real

[00:46:38] gently

[00:46:38] and

[00:46:39] I'll

[00:46:39] be

[00:46:40] like

[00:46:40] oh

[00:46:40] it

[00:46:40] says

[00:46:41] this

[00:46:41] and

[00:46:41] she'd

[00:46:42] be

[00:46:42] like

[00:46:42] that's

[00:46:43] actually

[00:46:43] not

[00:46:43] the

[00:46:43] lyric

[00:46:44] be

[00:46:45] like

[00:46:45] well

[00:46:45] what's

[00:46:45] the

[00:46:46] lyric

[00:46:47] and

[00:46:47] then

[00:46:48] she'd

[00:46:48] share

[00:46:48] it

[00:46:48] with

[00:46:48] me

[00:46:48] and

[00:46:48] I'd

[00:46:49] be

[00:46:49] like

[00:46:49] whoa

[00:46:50] that

[00:46:50] totally

[00:46:51] changes

[00:46:51] the

[00:46:51] song

[00:46:52] I

[00:46:52] like

[00:46:53] that

[00:46:53] better

[00:46:55] there's

[00:46:55] the

[00:46:55] matte

[00:46:56] version

[00:46:56] and

[00:46:56] then

[00:46:56] there's

[00:46:56] the

[00:46:56] good

[00:46:56] version

[00:46:57] so

[00:46:58] why

[00:46:59] do

[00:46:59] I

[00:46:59] say

[00:46:59] this

[00:46:59] well

[00:47:00] I'm

[00:47:00] being

[00:47:00] sanctified

[00:47:01] I'm

[00:47:02] reading

[00:47:02] lyric

[00:47:02] sheets

[00:47:02] no

[00:47:03] I'm

[00:47:03] not

[00:47:03] doing

[00:47:03] that

[00:47:03] but

[00:47:05] sometimes

[00:47:06] I

[00:47:06] think

[00:47:06] we

[00:47:06] can

[00:47:06] handle

[00:47:08] our

[00:47:08] past

[00:47:09] like

[00:47:10] that

[00:47:10] we've

[00:47:10] been

[00:47:10] singing

[00:47:11] a

[00:47:11] certain

[00:47:11] lyric

[00:47:11] to

[00:47:12] a

[00:47:12] song

[00:47:12] of

[00:47:12] our

[00:47:12] life

[00:47:14] and

[00:47:15] God

[00:47:15] comes

[00:47:15] along

[00:47:15] and

[00:47:16] says

[00:47:16] no

[00:47:16] that's

[00:47:16] not

[00:47:16] the

[00:47:16] lyrics

[00:47:18] let

[00:47:19] me

[00:47:19] tell

[00:47:19] you

[00:47:19] what

[00:47:19] they

[00:47:19] really

[00:47:20] are

[00:47:21] and

[00:47:22] he

[00:47:22] sings

[00:47:22] over

[00:47:22] us

[00:47:24] and

[00:47:24] then

[00:47:24] the

[00:47:24] song

[00:47:25] of

[00:47:25] our

[00:47:25] life

[00:47:25] has

[00:47:25] a

[00:47:25] new

[00:47:25] meaning

[00:47:27] because

[00:47:27] some

[00:47:28] of

[00:47:28] us

[00:47:29] the

[00:47:29] wrong

[00:47:30] lyrics

[00:47:30] got

[00:47:30] stuck

[00:47:31] in

[00:47:31] our

[00:47:31] head

[00:47:31] from

[00:47:31] early

[00:47:32] on

[00:47:34] where

[00:47:34] there's

[00:47:34] a

[00:47:34] parent

[00:47:35] that

[00:47:35] said

[00:47:36] you

[00:47:37] know

[00:47:37] what

[00:47:38] you're

[00:47:39] a

[00:47:39] screw

[00:47:39] up

[00:47:40] you're

[00:47:40] always

[00:47:40] going

[00:47:40] to

[00:47:40] be

[00:47:41] a

[00:47:41] screw

[00:47:41] up

[00:47:42] nothing

[00:47:42] you

[00:47:42] do

[00:47:42] is

[00:47:43] good

[00:47:43] enough

[00:47:44] that

[00:47:45] lyric

[00:47:45] gets

[00:47:46] stuck

[00:47:46] in

[00:47:46] our

[00:47:46] head

[00:47:47] and

[00:47:47] plays

[00:47:47] over

[00:47:47] and

[00:47:47] over

[00:47:47] again

[00:47:51] that

[00:47:51] said

[00:47:51] you're

[00:47:51] never

[00:47:51] going

[00:47:51] to

[00:47:52] amount

[00:47:52] to

[00:47:52] anything

[00:47:55] maybe

[00:47:55] it

[00:47:55] was

[00:47:56] a

[00:47:57] relationship

[00:47:57] that

[00:47:58] we

[00:47:58] have

[00:47:58] that

[00:47:59] someone

[00:47:59] used

[00:48:00] us

[00:48:00] abused

[00:48:00] us

[00:48:00] or

[00:48:01] sang

[00:48:01] a

[00:48:02] lyric

[00:48:02] over

[00:48:02] our

[00:48:03] life

[00:48:03] that

[00:48:03] just

[00:48:03] is

[00:48:03] stuck

[00:48:04] in

[00:48:04] there

[00:48:04] and

[00:48:05] guys

[00:48:06] if

[00:48:06] we're

[00:48:06] going

[00:48:06] to

[00:48:06] change

[00:48:07] and

[00:48:07] we're

[00:48:07] going

[00:48:07] to

[00:48:07] experience

[00:48:08] the

[00:48:08] kind

[00:48:09] of

[00:48:09] deep

[00:48:09] change

[00:48:11] of

[00:48:11] being

[00:48:12] made

[00:48:12] into

[00:48:12] the

[00:48:12] image

[00:48:12] of

[00:48:12] God

[00:48:13] it's

[00:48:13] going

[00:48:13] to

[00:48:14] be

[00:48:14] singing

[00:48:15] and

[00:48:16] inviting

[00:48:16] Christ

[00:48:17] to

[00:48:17] sing

[00:48:17] the

[00:48:17] right

[00:48:17] lyrics

[00:48:18] over

[00:48:18] our

[00:48:18] lives

[00:48:20] because

[00:48:21] so

[00:48:21] much

[00:48:21] of

[00:48:21] what

[00:48:22] we

[00:48:22] do

[00:48:22] is

[00:48:22] based

[00:48:22] on

[00:48:23] what

[00:48:23] we

[00:48:23] believe

[00:48:25] our

[00:48:25] identity

[00:48:25] is

[00:48:26] and

[00:48:27] if

[00:48:27] we

[00:48:27] can

[00:48:27] further

[00:48:27] press

[00:48:28] into

[00:48:28] the

[00:48:28] identity

[00:48:28] that

[00:48:29] Christ

[00:48:29] has

[00:48:29] for us

[00:48:30] man

[00:48:30] things

[00:48:30] will

[00:48:31] happen

[00:48:31] and

[00:48:32] things

[00:48:32] will

[00:48:33] change

[00:48:33] I know

[00:48:33] it

[00:48:33] for my

[00:48:34] own

[00:48:34] life

[00:48:34] personally

[00:48:35] where

[00:48:36] God

[00:48:36] has

[00:48:36] been

[00:48:36] able

[00:48:36] to

[00:48:37] dig

[00:48:37] deep

[00:48:38] into

[00:48:38] my

[00:48:38] heart

[00:48:39] and

[00:48:41] unsettle

[00:48:42] at

[00:48:42] times

[00:48:42] ways

[00:48:43] that

[00:48:43] I've

[00:48:43] grown

[00:48:44] to

[00:48:44] think

[00:48:45] that

[00:48:45] this

[00:48:45] is

[00:48:46] how

[00:48:46] I

[00:48:46] need

[00:48:46] to

[00:48:46] act

[00:48:47] but

[00:48:48] then

[00:48:48] to

[00:48:48] pour

[00:48:48] out

[00:48:48] his

[00:48:49] grace

[00:48:49] and

[00:48:49] his

[00:48:49] love

[00:48:50] and

[00:48:50] his

[00:48:50] favor

[00:48:50] and

[00:48:50] his

[00:48:51] acceptance

[00:48:52] man

[00:48:52] it

[00:48:52] really

[00:48:53] does

[00:48:53] change

[00:48:53] us

[00:48:54] from

[00:48:54] the

[00:48:54] inside

[00:48:55] out

[00:48:58] that's

[00:48:58] the

[00:48:58] process

[00:48:59] he

[00:49:00] wants

[00:49:00] to

[00:49:00] take

[00:49:00] us

[00:49:00] on

[00:49:01] it's

[00:49:02] a

[00:49:02] journey

[00:49:03] it's

[00:49:04] a

[00:49:04] lifelong

[00:49:04] journey

[00:49:05] but

[00:49:06] man

[00:49:06] he's

[00:49:06] after

[00:49:06] your

[00:49:06] joy

[00:49:07] he's

[00:49:08] after

[00:49:08] his

[00:49:08] glory

[00:49:08] in

[00:49:09] your

[00:49:09] life

[00:49:09] and

[00:49:10] he

[00:49:10] wants

[00:49:10] to

[00:49:10] see

[00:49:11] you

[00:49:12] formed

[00:49:12] into

[00:49:12] the

[00:49:13] image

[00:49:13] of

[00:49:13] his

[00:49:13] son

[00:49:13] so

[00:49:14] let's

[00:49:14] do

[00:49:15] it

[00:49:15] together

[00:49:15] thank

[00:49:19] you
